Established in 1827, Cades Cove Primitive Baptist Church served as an important place of worship and community gathering for the families who lived in the valley. The current white wooden church building was constructed in 1887 and still features its original handmade benches, simple pulpit, and traditional design. Surrounded by peaceful mountain scenery and a historic cemetery, the church offers visitors a meaningful glimpse into the faith and daily lives of Cades Cove’s early residents.
Russell Gregory Gravestone in Cades Cove
The gravestone of Russell Gregory stands in the historic cemetery beside Cades Cove Primitive Baptist Church. Gregory played an important role in the community, overseeing the construction of Parson Branch Road in 1838, which became a valuable trade route for Cades Cove residents. During the Civil War, he was killed by Confederate soldiers, and his grave remains a powerful reminder of the conflict and hardship experienced by families in the mountain community.
